Estonian President approves new government

Estonian President Alar Karis approved the new government of Prime Minister Kai Kallas on Monday, Report informs citing ERR.

The new government sworn in before the parliament members.

Earlier, the updated composition of the Cabinet of Ministers was presented to the country's President Alar Karis. During the ceremony, the head of state compared the new government to "a fire brigade or an ambulance": "We need to make sure that the house does not burn down and the patient survives."

The previous cabinet of ministers has been in office since January 2021. It was formed by a coalition of the two largest parties in the Estonian parliament, the Reform Party and the Center Party. The leader of the "reformists" Kaja Kallas headed the government.

In early June, Kallas unilaterally withdrew from the coalition and removed the "centrist" ministers from the government due to the disagreement between partners on public spending. On July 14, Kallas officially announced her resignation and the dissolution of the government, a formal step so that the leader of the "reformists" could form a new cabinet, retaining her post.

Now the government will consist of representatives of three parties. The new coalition, in addition to the reformists led by Kallas, included the Social Democrats and the conservative Isamaa ("Fatherland") party - together they are represented by 56 deputies out of 101 in the Estonian parliament. However, new elections will be held in the country in March next year.
