Hidetada Fukushima of the Nara Medical University Hospital where Japan's former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe underwent surgery has said the gunwound was too deep to reach the heart.
“When he was brought to the hospital he was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest,” he said at a news conference. “They tried to resuscitate him but at 17:03 (GMT+9 - ed.) he was pronounced dead.”
“He had gun wounds in two locations and died of heart failure from heavily damaged arteries,” the doctor said.
One person has been apprehended in relation to the shooting, NBC reported, citing officials.
