Congo calls for full access to Belgian colonial archives

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is calling for full and unrestricted access to Belgian colonial archives, Congo's Ombudsman Paul Nsapu Mukulu said at an international conference titled "101 Years of Belgian Colonial Injustices and the Struggle for Reparations," organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), Report informs.

He recalled that today marks the 101st anniversary of the law adopted on August 21, 1925.

"That law was an important milestone in shaping the framework for the administrative governance of Belgian colonies. On its 101st anniversary, we seek to draw attention to the involvement of experts from former colonial territories in these processes on an equal footing with international experts, as well as the return of human remains and other historical materials to their countries of origin," Mukulu said.
