Canadian lawmakers might visit Taiwan in fall

A Canadian congressional delegation led by parliamentarian Judy Sgro plans to visit Taiwan in October, Report informs via Radio Taiwan International.

Sgro says that though the visit is likely to prompt backlash from China, she will still go.

Sgro is president of the parliamentary Canada-Taiwan Friendship Group. According to Canadian media reports, she is expected to be joined by eight other members of the friendship group. All of the delegates are also members of the Canadian House of Commons’ standing committee on international trade.

The representatives aim to meet with Taiwanese government officials and companies to discuss trade and explore opportunities for deeper cooperation. Sgro says, “We need to protect other countries who have fought for their freedom and for their democracy.”

Sgro admits the trip could draw ire from China, but called the visit “necessary.” The trip was originally planned for last spring, but has been delayed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
