US President Joe Biden has submitted the candidacy of former US Ambassador to Russia William Burns to the post of head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for consideration by the US Senate, Report informs, referring to the press service of the White House.

Under President Barack Obama, Burns headed the US delegation at the talks of the ‘six’ international mediators with Iran on the nuclear issue. In 2005-2008, he was the US Ambassador to Moscow.

Biden announced his intention to appoint Burns as the head of the intelligence department on January 11.

If approved by the Senate, Burns will become the first career diplomat to serve as the CIA director.
