At least 66 people were killed in the last few days as a result of floods in the Central and Northern part of Mozambique, Report informs citing the Agence France-Presse.

An official representative of Mozambique government reported that the floods killed 66 people, the authorities introduced a red alert mode due to the ongoing rains and the approach of tropical cyclone Idai, that is expected to reach the country on 14 or 15 March.

According to the authorities, floods destroyed nearly 6 thousand houses, while about 140 thousand people and more than 100 thousand hectares of farmland were affected by the rampant elements. 16 centers were opened in Zambezia and Tete provinces for urgent accommodation of population. It is also planned to evacuate coastal areas that may be affected by the cyclone.
