EU High Representative urges Armenia and Azerbaijan to direct talks

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell held telephone consultations with the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Borrel wrote on his Twitter page.
"I spoke by phone with Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov. He stressed the need to defuse tensions and ensure a ceasefire. Direct communication between the two sides is essential. It is necessary to resume substantive negotiations under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk group."
Earlier, the European Union called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to de-escalate the situation on the border.

Starting on July 12, units of the Armenian armed forces, grossly violating the ceasefire regime in the Tovuz region of the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border, shelled our positions with artillery.

Service members of the Azerbaijan Army, non-commissioned officer, sergeant Sadigov Vugar Latif and senior soldier Mammadov Elshad Donmez died in holding off an enemy attack.

Despite our doctors' efforts, a severely wounded serviceman of the Azerbaijan Army, soldier Dashdemirov Khayyam Mahammad died.

The tension in the Tovuz direction of the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border continued on the night of July 13.
