Baku. 21 January. REPORT.AZ/ Abortions remain one of the most relevant problems in the present-day world. The pressure by the old-minded people saying 'this must be a boy' forces women to abortions. Parents agree to kill their unborn child for his gender. This promotes an increase in cases of wilful termination of pregnancy due to the child's sex, called the selective abortions. Report News Agency held a survey regading the issue.
OB-GYN doctor Rashad Soltan said that in some cases the general abortion is confused with selective abortion: "The patient's religion or race makes no difference for a doctor. We have to face the direct threat to a human life. So we do not differentiate between people for their gender. People should understand that the sex ratio of the world's population should not be changed. Your daughter is also your child. Selective abortions are unacceptable."
OB-GYN doctor Turab Janbakhishov said that as doctors, they witness gender discrimination in families: "Large families can have natural rights regarding the choice of their children's gender. If we do not legitimate some things, then it will be illegal. It is known that baby's sex can be learned on the 12th week. Girls constitute 80-85% of abortions performed after that period. It is also related to families' desire. The number of newborns has changed relative to boys compared to 5 years ago."
MP Musa Guliyev said that there is a flaw in this regard in the legislation: "If the law does not prohibit anything, then it is allowed. Therefore, the new bill will prohibit an ultrasound examination to learn the child's sex, unless there are specific medical instructions. Even if a child is aborted after 12th week, the reason should be based on medical prescription, but not the family's desire or social indicators. The decision on abortion should be made as a result of a concilium, but not by a doctor. Once the bill is adopted, administrative and criminal liability will be imposed on those who violate the law. In any case, there is a need for awareness campaigns. "
Mehriban Zeynalova, Head of the Public Union “Clean World”, emphasized that the killing of the baby in the womb is a real barbarism: "It sets up the base for direct violence against women and creates a serious foundation for other violence facts. The high number of boys hinder the formation of behavior towards girls. On the other hand, if the number of girls in a society is low, it leads to a higher sexual interest among boys. I do not think that educated people would make such a decision. No religion says 'go and kill your baby'.
Azerbaijani theologian - religious figure Haji Shahin Hasanli noted that the son is the blessing that God bestows upon a man: "According to the hadiths, the girl is considered more privileged that the son. Life experience also proves it. The girl is more loyal to her parents. If a family has a daughter, then their house is happier. It is said in the hadiths that the man who brings up three girls will go to paradise. If a boy is a blessing, a girl is a mercy. This is a special gift from Heaven. It is really cruel to kill the children for their gender. It is necessary to remove such topics from the agenda in a contemporary world."
Clinical psychologist Lala Huseynova said that women usually feel guilty after the first abortion: "They think 'I have killed my baby'. Culpability does not remain in the same form and later affects behavior, the person becomes aggressive, which can further lead to a suicide. When you give a birth to a child, you should think about his/her future, how to bring up and educate a healthy person, but not about his/her gender. It is a woman who gives birth to a boy, therefore, gender does not matter."
Notably, one abortion on average is performed every 50 seconds globally.
