Tomorrow, Azerbaijan will mark the 75th anniversary of the victory over fascism. The Azerbaijani people have contributed significantly to this triumph.

Speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament Sahiba Gafarova made the remarks at a plenary meeting on Friday, Report says.

"History should still be aware that Azerbaijan had indispensable contributions and role in the Second World War," she said, citing a speech of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

"During the war, Azerbaijan had sent more than 680,000 people to the front. "About 40,000 out of them served in the war voluntarily. Nearly 320,000 compatriots did not return from the battlefields. Our soldiers showed great heroism in the war. Over 400,000 Azerbaijanis were awarded military orders, medals, and another 130 were conferred on the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Five national divisions were formed in Azerbaijan, one of which, the 416th Azerbaijani Taganrog Division was one of the first military units to enter Berlin," Gafarova said.

"During the war, the economy of Azerbaijan was adapted to the needs of the army. Baku supplied 75 million tons of oil and 22 million tons of gasoline to the frontlines. Four out of every five planes, tanks, cars, and warships involved in the war ran on fuel produced in Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani enterprises produced 130 types of weapons, ammunition, and other military equipment," she stressed.

According to her, nowadays, Azerbaijan provides housing, cars, and benefits to the war veterans.

The speaker expressed confidence that under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, a new day of victory, a holiday dedicated to the defeat of Armenian fascism, the liberation of Karabakh and the restoration of justice will soon enter the history of Azerbaijan.

The Second World War claimed more than 60 million lives. Azerbaijan always commemorates the victims of 1941-1945, and the state pays a high level of attention to the war veterans.

The victory over fascism is as an official holiday in Azerbaijan.
