Jabrayil district was established on August 8, 1930. It was abolished on January 4, 1963 and merged with Fuzuli district, and then, re-established on June 17, 1964. Jabrayil is located in the south-east of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, in the Gayan plain and in the Karabakh range. The region borders the Islamic Republic of Iran along the Araz River in the south. Its area is 1,049 square kilometers, and its territory is mostly mountainous. The banks of the Araz River were once dense with Tugay forests. The highly fertile soils of the Araz plains are dark brown.

Jabrayil district was occupied by the Armenian Armed Forces on August 23, 1993. During the occupation, the district consisted of 1 city, 4 settlements and 97 villages. During the occupation years, IDPs from Jabrayil settled in about 2,000 settlements, tent camps, freight cars and dormitories in 58 other districts of Azerbaijan.

On January 5, 1994, during the Horadiz operation, Jabrayil’s Jojug Marjanli village was liberated from occupation. As a result of the Azerbaijani Army's counterattack during the fighting in April 2016, the Lalatapa hills were cleared of the enemy and the village of Jojug Marjanli came under the control of the Azerbaijani Army.

On October 4, 2020, the President of Azerbaijan, victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, in his address to the nation, announced the liberation of Jabrayil’s administrative center and 9 other villages.

During the Second Karabakh War, one city and 80 villages of the Jabrayil district were liberated by the Azerbaijani Army. With the liberation of Jabrayil from enemy occupation, state control over the Azerbaijani-Iranian border was partially restored.

Six days after Azerbaijan's victory over the enemy in the Great Patriotic War, on November 16, 2020, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the liberated Jabrayil district.

The president raised the glorious Azerbaijani flag in Jabrayil and Khudafarin Bridge.

According to the relevant decrees signed by President Ilham Aliyev on December 24, 2020 and June 24, 2021, a group of servicemen was awarded the medal "For the liberation of Jabrayil."

The Jabrayil district was vandalized during the Armenian occupation. Houses and historical monuments in the region were completely destroyed and trees were cut.
