World's first eco-friendly cemetery opens in Belgium

The world's first nature-safe cemetery was opened in the city of Drongen (Flanders, Belgium). It is intended solely for environmentally friendly burials - in completely biodegradable coffins and without gravestones, Report informs, citing Europulse.

There are no paved paths or borders, only wooden benches and signs, between graves in this area. To honor the memory of the deceased, relatives or friends can hang a birdhouse with his name on one of the cherry trees growing next to the site.

Places in the new cemetery are not for sale, they can be rented for 25 years. During this time, according to the estimates of the project creators, the human body will completely merge with nature. Archaeologists have discovered a burial mound dating back to the Bronze Age in this area. There are wooden pillars around it and a ditch dug out, where it will be possible to bury urns with ashes.
