UN rep: Housing sector should be assessed holistically, systemically

Natural disasters displace millions of people every year, and the housing sector suffers the greatest losses, Kamal Kishore, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, said at WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.

He stated that housing should be assessed not only as a construction issue, but also using a holistic, systems-based approach.

"Homes are the places where people should feel safest, and resilience must begin there. Risks arise not only from natural hazards, but also from urban planning, building standards, financing, and management decisions," he noted.
