Effective development of megacities requires new governance mechanisms and long-term agreements between different levels of government and regions, Valeria Fedeli, a professor at the Politecnico di Milano, said at an event during WUF13, Report informs.
She stated that modern metropolitan areas require not only institutional reforms but also a common spatial development strategy capable of integrating the interests of central and peripheral areas.
"Agglomerations must become an instrument of territorial unity, not a source of further fragmentation," she said.
Fedeli added that an intersectoral approach to megacity development must consider housing, infrastructure, climate, economics, and social policy issues simultaneously.
