Freightage via North-South transport corridor increased by 2.3-fold in the six months of 2019, National Secretary of the Transport Cooperation Program (TRACECA) on Azerbaijan Akif Mustafayev told Report.
According to him, the freightage via this corridor was 1 million tonnes in 2018.
Mustafayev noted that the cargo transportation via the corridor is carried out in two stages: ‘The freight is brought to Iran’s Astara via trucks then to Azerbaijan and Russia via railway’.
The project is being carried out in accordance with the intergovernmental agreement signed by Russia, Iran and India on September 12, 2000. Azerbaijan joined the project in 2005. The agreement was ratified by Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine. The corridor is intended for connection of North Europe with Couth-East Asia.
At the first stage, the corridor will be available for transportation of 5 million tonnes of cargo, then – for more than 10 million tonnes.
