Azerbaijan prevents drug smuggling from Iran

The State Border Service has halted smuggling of a total of 55 kilograms and 360 grams of drugs from Iran in three cases over the past few days; the SBS told Report.

On May 10, the border guards found a bag lying unattended in the service area of the border post near Orujmahalla village of Astara region, which contained substances like 4,900 grams of marijuana, 3,450 grams of heroin, 1,550 grams of opium, 2,000 grams of methamphetamine, 3,800 methadone 40 mg tablets with a total weight of 11.9 kilograms.

In another operation jointly carried out on the same day with the Interior Ministry, 5.56 kilograms of "heroin"-like substance was seized in the service area of the border post near the village of Pelikash, Astara region.

On May 11, the border guards halted an attempt of trespassing near Ahmadli village of Beylagan region. Upon the order to stop, the trespasser threw away his belongings and fled. When inspecting the items, the border guards seized drugs like 19,180 grams of opium, 16,305 grams of heroin, and 2,415 grams of marijuana in cellophane packages weighing 37.9 kilograms.

Operational and investigative measures are underway toward the facts.
