Scientists propose new method to diagnose health status of COVID-19 patients

Scientists around the world are working on a vaccine for COVID-19. WHO officials said at least 20 coronavirus vaccines are in development in the global race for the cure. “Any vaccine for the coronavirus would have to made available to everyone, not just the “haves.” Now, the scientific organizations worldwide initiated to work jointly on a different system, such as to determine the health state of the patients with coronavirus.

Scientists have proposed a new method that will help determine the severity of the health state of the patient infected with a coronavirus, Report says, citing the Izvestia.

For example, researchers from the University of Verona and the University clinic of Padua, along with other scientists from the United States, analyzed several scientific articles about the level of platelets in patients with coronavirus.

The study examined the medical history of 1,779 patients, and 339 of those infected were in serious condition. Comparing the indicators of clinical tests, scientists concluded that the risk of severe disease and mortality in patients with coronavirus increases if the body has a low number of platelets.

Thus, platelet levels can indicate some aspects of the state of the homeostasis system, whose functions are to preserve the liquid state of the blood, stop bleeding when damaged vascular walls, and dissolve blood clots.
