Patients with compensated diabetes mellitus tolerate COVID-19 well, but those with decompensated, uncontrolled diabetes may face serious complications, Report informs, citing Gannadi Babek Salek, the Chief Endocrinologist of the Azerbaijani Health Ministry.
The specialist noted that a sharp increase in blood sugar levels leads to diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic retinopathy.
“For this reason, people with diabetes rank second in the statistics of mortality from COVID-19 after cardiovascular patients. These people need to be vaccinated against COVID-19,” the specialist stressed.
