India designs National Clinical Management Protocol to treat Covid-19

India has designed a National Clinical Management Protocol based on Ayurveda and Yoga for the management of Covid-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global health crisis posing an unprecedented public health emergency throughout the globe. This situation is much more difficult due to possible devastating situations because of several social and economic factors. Effective management to address this infection is still evolving, and the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has made an attempt to integrate traditional interventions along with the standard of care.

The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has designed a National Clinical Management Protocol based on Ayurveda and Yoga to manage Covid-19. Ayurveda and Yoga can undoubtedly play a pivotal role in augmenting preventive measures. The current understanding of COVID-19 indicates that good immune status is vital to prevent and to safeguard from disease progression. While formulating a COVID-19 management protocol, the following aspects were considered:

a) Knowledge from Ayurveda classics and experience from clinical practices

b) Empirical evidence and Biological plausibility

c) Emerging trends of ongoing clinical studies The consensus document on the management protocol has been developed by experts of various national research organization of India for managing mild COVID 19 cases.

Moderate to Severe COVID-19 individuals may have an informed choice of treatment options, whereas severe cases will need to be referred to specialized hospitals. Protocol and its annexure have been approved by an Interdisciplinary Committee to include Ayurveda and Yoga in the management of mild COVID-19 and authorized by the empowered committee of the Interdisciplinary AYUSH Research and Development Taskforce on COVID-19.
