Older people should not lose weight, Russian gerontologist Yury Konev said in an interview with Radio Sputnik,
“There is a consensus that it is contraindicated for elderly and senile people to lose weight. A change in metabolism leads to a negative change in physiology. It negatively affects the health of an elderly person,” Konev said.
At the same time, according to the specialist, people should bring the weight back to normal before the age of 60 so that the body does not require more food than necessary.
“Energy requirements decrease with age, and a distended stomach tells you that you are hungry. There is a dissonance here, since the stomach signals to us that we are hungry, but the amount of food eaten must be reduced with age,” the gerontologist noted.
