Ukrainian MPs: January massacre in Baku should never be repeated

Ukrainians, who have endured several bloody revolutions and war, honor the memory of those who died for Azerbaijan's freedom on January 20, Yuriy Kamelchuk, an MP from the ruling Servant of the People party of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada (Parliament), told Report.

Kamelchuk noted that today Azerbaijanis commemorate those who died as a result of the Soviet troops' attack on January 20, 1990: "The January massacre in Baku is a prime example of horrific events that should never be repeated. Both Ukraine and Azerbaijan maintain the right peaceful stance. Historically, they have always been targeted by oppressive empires against their independence," he added.

Another MP of the Verkhovna Rada, Yelyzaveta Yasko, stated that at that time, the Kremlin was continuing its tradition of killing peaceful people in Baku under the pretext of "restoring order": "Earlier, they had done this before in Tbilisi, Almaty, and Budapest. Because Moscow believed (and unfortunately still believes) that it has the right to decide how people should live in neighboring countries. Before the tragic ‘Black January’ events, the Soviet leadership had already used brutal force in Almaty and Tbilisi, and later in Vilnius and Riga. The attempt to suppress national movements by brutal force failed against the backdrop of the collapse of the imperial idea," she said.
