Samad Seyidov: US is interested in peaceful settlement of conflict”

Azerbaijan-US relations have always been at a high level, said the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Interparliamentary Relations, head of the Azerbaijan-US working group for interparliamentary relationships, Samad Seyidov.

According to him, one of the first countries recognized Azerbaijan’s independence was the US: “Therefore, it is not accidental that the US President Donald Trump was one of the first heads of states that congratulated Azerbaijan on May 28 – Republic Day. I want to underline three main points in the letter. First, the US strongly supports Azerbaijan by recognizing its independence and sovereignty. That is the high-level respect of the US to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, its internationally recognized borders. This is an essential point for Azerbaijan, of which Nagorno Karabakh and seven adjacent districts are under occupation, and nearly 1 million people are refugees and IDPs.”

“Second, appreciation of economic relations, energy projects with Azerbaijan by the US at high-level is a very significant issue. It’s very important that the US that has been in cooperation with Azerbaijan for more than 30 years has appreciated works carried out by Azerbaijan in the energy field for Europe and the world. There is also a point that all works carried out for the welfare of the Azerbaijani people using these projects are supported and welcomed by the US. Azerbaijan’s domestic and foreign policies are also respected by the US.”

Third, the US is co-chair of the Minsk Group, and as the co-chair, it is interested in the peaceful settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict. It’s essential that the letter mentioned the conduction of negotiations within the Minsk Group and the making of efforts for this purpose. Generally, the world’s leading powers have recently been welcoming the issues reflecting Azerbaijan’s national interests, territorial integrity, negotiations within the existing format, restoration of international law in our region. EU’s decision and US letter prove it,” Seyidov said.

US President Donald Trump has sent a letter of congratulation to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of May 28 – Republic Day.
