Russian expert: Azerbaijan a safety outpost in Caspian region

Baku. 3 April. REPORT.AZ/ Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia in the Caspian Sea is an important factor in maintaining regional stability and security.

Report informs, Igor Seleznev, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Socio-Political Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences said at a roundtable dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Azerbaijani-Russian relations.

"As Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said, Moscow proceeds from the premise that Azerbaijan today is safety outpost in the Caspian," I. Seleznev said.

According to him, the countries need to more effectively cooperate and interact in the Caspian Sea to solve problems.

"The biggest problem for today is the unsettled legal status of the Caspian Sea. Another important problem remains the division of the shelves", official of the Russian Academy of Sciences emphasized.

He also pointed to more active co-operation in the sphere of ensuring security between Russia and Azerbaijan in the Caspian Sea.

"It is gratifying that Azerbaijan managed to protect itself from challenges of international terrorism and ensure stability," Seleznev said.
