Renate Brison: BIG is an important ally in Saint Martin's independence struggle

The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) is an important ally in the struggle for Saint Martin's independence, Pro Soualiga Foundation Secretary Renate Brison said in response to Report's question during the conference "French and Dutch Colonialism in Saint Martin - One Island, One People, One Destiny" in Baku.

BIG maintains contacts with the UN and can help bring the plight of peoples under colonial oppression to international attention, Brison said.

Brison confidently emphasized that thanks to the support of the initiative group, colonized peoples will be able to gain independence.

According to him, the metropole has subordinated the institutions of power and self-government in Saint Martin, resulting in citizens being unable to choose the politicians who will govern society.

"This is unacceptable. People should choose their own politicians or parliamentarians who will make decisions for the benefit of society. This should in no way be done by the Dutch state and governors," he said.
