Baku. 8 February. REPORT.AZ / "Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is elected by the people and is a legitimate head of state", Venezuelan Ambassador to Azerbaijan Christopher Berroteran said.

"The sovereignty of the state is in the hands of the people. The United States has officially announced its intention to stage a coup in Venezuela, they want to establish an illegal regime in Venezuela. It is a disrespect to the norms of international law. The US is not owner of the world," he said.

The diplomat noted that  the Venezuelan Constitution is an example for the whole world." "It clearly states when and how presidential elections should be held in Venezuela (the President in Venezuela is elected for 6 years. The next elections are scheduled for 2023-ed.)". The next elections, to be held in the country, are the election of deputies to the National Assembly", Berroteran said.

He stressed that the leader of the Venezuelan opposition Juan Guaido has no authority to announce a referendum.

"He deceived the people, the international community and announced that he could hold early presidential elections within 30 days. According to our Constitution, the President of the National Assembly does not have such a right. Only people can demand a referendum", Berroteran  concluded.
