The chairman of the State Migration Service (SMS) of Azerbaijan Vusal Huseynov has revealed the number of foreigners living in Azerbaijan as refugees in 2021, Report informs.

According to Huseynov, the number of decisions taken against illegal migration in Azerbaijan last year was 9,074: “This figure shows an increase of 24% compared to 2020 (7,317). One hundred fifty people were placed in detention centers for illegal migrants. This number decreased by 2.2 times compared to 2020 (332). The number of people living as refugees has not changed over the past two years. This figure was 78 in 2020 and 2021. Of those living in the country with refugee status, 43 are citizens of Iran, 26 are citizens of Afghanistan, 4 are citizens of Libya, 3 are citizens of Pakistan and 2 are citizens of the Republic of South Africa.”

Vusal Huseynov said that last year there were 35 refugees and asylum seekers.

“In 2020, this number was 305, which means that last year this figure decreased by 8.7 times,” he added.
