Nidal Salim: Global South becoming center of global urbanization

Holding the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform for the first time in the South Caucasus is particularly significant given the rapid urbanization processes in the countries of the Global South, Nidal Salim, founder of the Global Institute for Water, Environment and Health (GIWEH) and member of the Asia Water Council, said at the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform in Baku, Report informs.

He stated that the current assembly is not simply an international meeting, but a reflection of a shared commitment to creating more inclusive, people-centered cities based on the real needs of society.

"Today, the Global South is at the center of the global urbanization process. By 2050, nearly 70% of the planet's population will live in cities, primarily in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and other developing regions," he noted.

Nidal Salim emphasized that despite emerging opportunities for economic growth and development, cities face significant challenges, including a lack of affordable housing, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, chaotic urbanization, climate risks, infrastructure deficits, and growing social inequality.

"Millions of people still face fundamental challenges-access to safe housing, protection from the impacts of climate change, and the ability to participate in urban development decisions. This demonstrates that sustainable development requires not only infrastructure construction but also inclusive governance, strong institutions, and the active participation of civil society. NGOs and public organizations play a key role here," he said.

He also noted that Azerbaijan has demonstrated important leadership in promoting dialogue and inclusive development, and Baku exemplifies the balance between modernization, the preservation of historical heritage, and the active participation of civil society.
