MFA: Ongoing territorial claims in Armenian constitution are main obstacle to peace

The ongoing territorial claims against Azerbaijan in the Armenian constitution are the main obstacle to the peace process, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said, Report informs.

He made this statement during a telephone conversation with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy.

During the conversation, the parties initially discussed the prospects for cooperation between the two countries, the current regional situation, and the state of the normalization and peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The British minister expressed his condolences on January 20 - National Day of Mourning and the tragic crash of the AZAL plane on the Baku-Grozny flight on December 25. He stated that the UK is ready to provide support in investigating the causes of the tragedy.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov expressed gratitude for the condolences and solidarity and briefed David Lammy about the ongoing work to investigate the plane crash.

The broad prospects of relations between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom in political, economic, alternative energy, humanitarian, and other areas were noted. The importance of intensifying mutual visits and political dialogue to develop relations and further deepen the partnership between the two countries was highlighted.

The British minister congratulated Azerbaijan on the successful hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and emphasized the importance of continuing joint cooperation in combating climate change.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, in turn, informed the British official about the current situation in the region and the peace process, highlighting that, despite significant progress on the peace agreement and delimitation, the ongoing territorial claims against Azerbaijan in the Armenian constitution remain the main obstacle to the peace process.

During the telephone conversation, views were exchanged on other regional and international issues of mutual interest as well.
