Luigi Boulet: Martinicans protect their national identity

Martinique continues to fight for economic and cultural independence, despite the assimilation policy of France, aimed at destroying national identity, Luigi Boulet, department head at the Movement of Democrats and Environmentalists for a Sovereign Martinique (MODEMAS), said at the international conference "Colonialism: Erasing National-Religious Identity" held in Baku, Report informs.

According to Boulet, the economy of Martinique remains completely dependent on the metropolis, which significantly slows down its development. "We do not have a free economy. Sugar and bananas are the main exports, but these industries are completely controlled by France, and Martinicans do not receive real benefits from using their own resources," he emphasized.

Boulet also noted that the education system and law enforcement agencies on the island serve the interests of the French government, not the local population.

In his opinion, France is also trying to present assimilation as a natural process, but the residents of Martinique continue to speak their language and follow their traditions. "This is our path to freedom," Boulet concluded.
