Ka Ubuntu Leader: ‘France talks about human rights but doesn't respect our people’

“Although France talks about human rights, it doesn't respect our people,” Romain Catambara, Chairman of the Ka Ubuntu independence movement, told Report.

He made the remark at the Baku-hosted international conference “Independence of Réunion: A Look at the Colonial Legacy of France and the Path to Sovereignty,” organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).

Catambara addressed the issue of compensation payments to the descendants of those who previously suffered from slavery in Réunion: "Our first demand is the return of our lands. Then, recognizing our history is also crucial. People must unite to achieve sovereignty. This is the only way we can demand compensation for the descendants of those who suffered from slavery. We are currently working on our agenda and will reclaim our heritage ourselves."
