GUAM Secretary General called on OSCE to contribute more actively to conflict resolution

Baku. 12 June. REPORT.AZ/ The Secretary General of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development-GUAM Altai Efendiyev called on the OSCE to more active and focused assistance in conflict resolution. Report informs citing the press service of GUAM, A. Efendiyev said this at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna.

Speaking, the Secretary General drew the attention of the representatives of the OSCE member states to the escalation of tension and the deteriorating situation in the GUAM member states and in the region as a whole as a result of armed conflicts.

It was noted that these conflicts not only hamper the normal development of countries and the implementation of democratic reforms, but also pose a serious threat to European and international stability and security.

The Secretary General stressed that existing conflicts on the territory of the organization should be resolved on the basis of universally recognized norms and principles of international law and in restoring the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the GUAM member states within the framework of internationally recognized borders.

In response, representatives of Malta (as EU Presidents), Georgia, USA, Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan welcomed the speech of the GUAM Secretary General at the OSCE Permanent Council, expressed support for GUAM initiatives and interest in cooperation.
