European Commissioner: Azerbaijan is important partner of European Union

Baku. 1 June. REPORT.AZ/ "Azerbaijan is an important partner of the European Union".

Report informs, EU Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources, Günter Oettinger said while delivering a lecture at ADA University.

He emphasized that the parties have successfully cooperated in many areas.

"The Eastern Partnership project plays an important role in the development of Azerbaijan-EU relations. We are also working on a new agreement. In addition, the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and the EU makes half of Azerbaijan's total trade turnover",  the European commissioner said.

G. Oettinger stressed that there will be need for traditional types of energy for more 10 years and Azerbaijan has to diversify its economy in this respect. According to him, the country has great potential in the field of alternative energy and tourism.

He also stressed the importance of opening of the Southern Gas Corridor: "This project is another success of relations between Azerbaijan and Europe. It is designed to ensure energy security of Europe. Our cooperation is also aimed at ensuring regional security."
