Azerbaijani expert: Development of ties with US serves realization of peace process in South Caucasus

The development of our relations with the United States not only enhances our image in the international arena but also serves the realization of the peace process in the South Caucasus, Professor Sabir Mammadli told Report.

"It is no coincidence that the United States pays growing attention to Azerbaijan. There are several reasons for this. Against the background of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the situation in Europe is quite tense. It manifests itself in the difficulties associated with natural gas reserves. That is why the US and European countries want Azerbaijan to help them supply natural gas. Several states have already applied to us for this. Official Washington also supports this process. At the same time, Azerbaijan provides the necessary support to Ukraine at the state and public levels. Of course, this does not go unnoticed by the US. Besides, the Novruz holiday was an opportunity for US President Joseph Biden to thank and write a letter to our President," he stressed.

According to Mammadli, the new stage of relations promises dividends for official Baku:

"Of course, these contacts, including the exchange of letters, are a good opportunity to bring our problems to the attention of the US. The US has a significant chance to influence Armenia. There are about 2,500 US diplomatic representatives in Armenia. In time, they supported the Pashinyan revolution and then influenced public opinion. In this sense, Washington has a significant effect in terms of bringing Yerevan to the peace table. Azerbaijan has recently appealed to the other side with a final peace agreement. The event held in Shusha with the participation of the UN was also of particular importance since Washington has enough impact in that organization. In this sense, the development of our relations not only enhances our image in the international arena but also serves the realization of the peace process in the South Caucasus."
