Azerbaijan-Latvia intergovernmental commission to hold next meeting in Riga

Restarting air passenger transport between Latvia and Azerbaijan, which was successfully developing before the COVID pandemic, is in both countries’ interests, Transport Minister Talis Linkaits said during a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Latvia Javanshir Akhundov, Report informs referring to The Baltic Times.

The minister indicated that Latvia’s airBaltic national carrier plans to start flying between Riga and Baku twice a week as of June 2 this year. Riga also sees a potential in cargo transportation both between Latvia and Azerbaijan and across Eurasia.

During the conversation, which took place in order to discuss bilateral cooperation and coordinate further steps in preparation for the upcoming meeting of the Latvia-Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission, the two officials noted the commission’s role in stepping up cooperation in all areas, including business, science, and culture.

At the same time, the Latvian side confirmed readiness to host the next meeting of the intergovernmental commission in Riga in the second half of 2021, as soon as the epidemiological situation permits.

The officials agreed that until the intergovernmental commission’s meeting, it is important to continue cooperation on the level of ministries and entrepreneurs, so that the commission could discuss measures and results of practical cooperation.
