Azerbaijan has brought a new breath to the Non-Aligned Movement, making it clear that it is in our interests to work actively to change many processes, negative dynamics and achieve positive results, political scientist Tofig Abbasov told Report.

He recalled that in the context of a pandemic, it was President Ilham Aliyev who initiated the summit at the level of a contact group of 40 countries with the participation of the leadership of the World Health Organization and other organizations to discuss the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic in the third world countries and provide assistance to these states.

"It is no secret that many countries are experiencing great difficulties associated with a shortage of financial resources, medicines, technologies, etc. The initiative to hold the summit has had tremendous success, and many countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America have taken advantage of this opportunity. In this case, Azerbaijan acted as a driver to assist states in a critical situation," Abbasov said.

The expert also expressed confidence in Azerbaijan's adherence to the Bandung principles, which include the norms of respect for the principles of good neighborliness, inviolability of borders, and respect for the sovereignty of other states.

"Azerbaijan drew attention to precisely those fundamental forces that once served to create this organization and, using its own experience, present to the community the system of coordination that can ensure the supremacy of international law," Abbasov said.

According to the political scientist, Baku has become an active engine within the framework of the NAM: "Azerbaijan is coping with its mission brilliantly, justifying the hopes of the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement and creating a very favorable precedent for the future of this organization."

In 2019, Azerbaijan took over the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement for three years.
