Europa League champion Chelsea is to vie for UEFA Super Cup against Champions League winner Liverpool for the first time in Istanbul today.
Report informs that Liverpool, which won the sixth European Champions Cup in June, is to vie for the sixth time for the UEFA Super Cup, which they have already won for the third time. For Chelsea, it will be the fourth bout for the UEFA Super Cup. They lost the two last bouts.
Chelsea and Liverpool will play in European competition for the 11th time, although they first encountered each other in UEFA tournaments only in 2005. All ten previous matches were in the Champions League. Five of them ended in a draw, two were won by Liverpool, while Chelsea won three, and only once did the difference in the score exceed one goal.
It is noteworthy that no matter who gets the victory in Turkey, there will be eight UEFA Super Cups in England, which yields solely to Spain (15) and Italy (9) for this indicator.
It is worth noting that for the first time since 2013, not a Spanish representative will get the UEFA Super Cup. In 2013, in Prague, Bayern defeated Chelsea in a series of 11-meter shoot-outs.
A female judge for the first time in history will judge the game for the UEFA Super Cup between men.
