Baku. 18 May. REPORT.AZ/ The former Turkish referee, Doğan Babacan, who showed the first red card in the history of world championships, has died.

Report informs, Babacan died at the age of 88. He also became the first Turkish referee to participate in the World Cup in the history. Babacan, who participated in the World Championship in Germany in 1974, showed a red card for Chilean footballer Carlos Caszely. Caszely was expelled from the playground on the 67th minute of the match with Germany for rudeness against Berti Vogts, the former head coach of the Azerbaijani national team.

Notably, use of the red card in world championships began in 1970, but judges did not apply to it.
