AFFA suspends Azerbaijan Premier League and national cup

AFFA Executive Committee held a video conference today to discuss the Azerbaijan Premier League and the Azerbaijan Cup, Report says, citing the Association’s website.

The Committee decided to suspend the 2019/2020 season of the Azerbaijan Premier League and the national cup taking into account the rising rate in nationwide COVID-19 infections. Moreover, the lack of time for clubs to train due to the extended quarantine regime, and the necessity of protection of players, coaches, and others involved in the process.

As a result, the current tournament schedule determined the winner of the season.

Karabakh FC, the leader of 20 rounds with 45 points, was named champion. The Agdam club will represent Azerbaijan in the Champions League in the 2020/2021 season, while Neftchi, Keshla, and Sumgayit clubs will play in the Europa League.

Karabakh FC has won seven consecutive championships and eight in general. Sumgayit FC, for the first time, won the right to represent Azerbaijan in European Cups.

Earlier, the Executive Committee announced to resume the Premier League on June 21.
