Official: EU aims to deepen energy co-op with Azerbaijan

The European Union is confident that 2025 will be a stage for further strengthening of energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, an official representative of the EU told Report.

"Considering the present EU gas situation, outlook and our shared ambition to continue increasing gas supplies from Azerbaijan and to expand the Southern Gas Corridor, we are confident that 2025 will bring a further deepening to our bilateral energy relations. It will help secure greater diversification of our energy supplies towards ending Russian energy imports," the representative noted.

"2024 was another good year for the implementation of the EU-Azerbaijan strategic partnership in the field of energy.

Energy transition aspects of our strategic partnership came to the forefront in 2024, especially with Azerbaijan hosting and chairing the annual UN Climate Change Conference. We are particularly satisfied that our collaborative efforts to tackle methane emissions from the oil and gas supply chains are coming to fruition, under the framework of the Global Methane Pledge."

"The EU and Azerbaijan aim to continue bilateral trade of natural gas via the Southern Gas Corridor. Of course, this is subject to commercial viability and market demand. With our political support, economic operators know that Azerbaijan is an important supplier of gas, and that the EU is an important consumer market. It belongs to market participants to assess the actual opportunities and agree on commercial terms for increased volumes that will underpin investment in increased pipeline capacity," the EU representative added.
