Concept of green energy being developed in liberated territories

A concept document is being prepared together with an international consultant to establish "green energy" zones in the liberated territories, Azerbaijani Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov said at an event on "Financing Sustainable Development: Resilient and Green COVID-19 Recovery" in Baku, Report informs.

Soltanov said that after the government's approval, it would become a master plan, a more detailed plan.

"The goal is to meet all of Karabakh's electricity needs from 'green energy. Our potential regarding the liberated territories is high. Also, the construction of a power plant on the Araz River will be completed within two years. In addition, a contract was signed for the construction of a 240-megawatt solar power plant in the southern part of Karabakh - the Jabrayil district," the deputy minister added.

Soltanov added that solar and wind power plants are also planned to be built in other parts of Azerbaijan - Alat and Khizi: "Agreements have already been signed in this direction."

The liberated areas have a potential of 7,200 megawatts of solar and 2,000 megawatts of wind energy. Expansion of the use of renewable energy sources has been set as a priority by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and the goal is to increase the share of electricity in the installed capacity to 30% (currently 17%) by 2030.
