Expert: Climate change to affect 36.6% of Azerbaijan's territory

Over a third of Azerbaijan's territory - 36.6% - is projected to face the impacts of climate change in the future, Jamal Huseynov, associate professor at the National Aviation Academy and PhD in Geography, said at a roundtable during Baku Climate Action Week, Report informs.

Speaking at the event, Huseynov warned that the frequency of flooding in the Kura-Araz lowland will increase significantly over time, while extreme weather events will intensify across the Absheron Peninsula.

"These processes will also continue on the Absheron Peninsula. The frequency of hail and thunderstorms, as well as the volume of extreme atmospheric precipitation, will increase. We will observe these phenomena more intensely over the next five years," Huseynov said.

He noted that while extreme precipitation on the Absheron Peninsula was recorded only once in 2024, similar natural phenomena have already been observed three times this year.

"This process will accelerate. The problem of flooding on the Absheron Peninsula is already evident. In mountainous regions, in turn, floods will become more frequent," the expert added.
