Armenia must keep mining activities in border areas under control, Azerbaijani MP and co‑founder of the Environmental Protection First Coalition Parvana Valiyeva said at a briefing regarding the coalition's appeal to participants of the Leaders Summit and COP17 in Armenia under the slogan Leaders for Nature, Report informs.
Valiyeva stressed that Armenia's pollution of the transboundary rivers with harmful waste has a very negative impact on Azerbaijan's environment: "The UNEP fact‑finding mission conducted in April 2026 in the liberated territories confirmed the pollution of the Okhchuchay River. As peace talks between the two countries continue, discussions on transboundary river pollution must be held."
The MP emphasized that Armenia must control mining activities in border areas: "Armenia's economic development should not come at the expense of destroying the region's water resources and ecosystems."
She also noted that Armenia has not yet joined the UN Economic Commission's Water Convention: "Therefore, Armenia does not sign any accountability documents regarding the ecosystem of transboundary rivers."
