If a 41% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions isn't achieved worldwide by 2030, it will not be possible to achieve the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 C, stated Inger Andersen, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), at a COP29 event in Baku, Report informs.
According to Andersen, cities carry a significant burden in achieving this goal: "The weight of cities is important in the climate context, but this is also where the majority of our population lives. In fact, 25 megacities are responsible for 52% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide."
