Grant Wahl, an esteemed American sports journalist best known for his soccer reporting with a focus on storytelling and behind-the-scenes coverage of the rise of the sport in the United States, died at the age of 49 early Saturday in Qatar.
Wahl collapsed while in the press box of Lusail Stadium during the Argentina-Netherlands quarterfinal match, Report informs, citing CBS News.
The journalist died due to a heart attack.
His family does not agree with the indicated cause of death. His brother Eric said the journalist was in perfect health. Grant's brother expressed confidence that Wahl could have been killed. He noted that days before the journalist's death, he was detained for wearing a rainbow t-shirt.
