An Australian hockey player has been arrested for allegedly trying to buy cocaine in Paris, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed.
According to Report, which cites The Australian Morning Herald, the player, 28-year-old Tom Craig, was taken into custody after French police alleged an Australian was attempting to obtain the drug in a trendy Paris neighbourhood known for its theatres and shopping.
“The Australian Olympic Committee has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th,” an AOC statement read.
“No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make inquiries and arrange support for the team member.”
The Kookaburras were knocked out of the quarter-finals earlier this week.
The Paris Public Prosecutor’s office said the player was arrested outside a building in the city’s ninth arrondissement on Wednesday (AEST).
“Police officers who witnessed a cocaine transaction at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement, on the night of August 6 to 7, arrested the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia and who is said to be a member of the Australian field hockey team,” a spokesperson told this masthead.
“With regard to the quantities of narcotics seized from the seller, the investigations have been entrusted to the Narcotics Squad.”
