Armenia may be denied the right to host the World Weightlifting Championships due to the incident with the burning of the Azerbaijani flag at the opening ceremony of the European Championships in Yerevan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia Karen Giloyan said, Report informs referring to the local media.
On April 14, during the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championship, designer Aram Nikolyan snatched the flag of Azerbaijan from the flag bearer and set it on fire, after which he ran off the stage with the flag.
“The most depressing thing is that we almost yesterday, even before the incident, received the right to host the 2024 World Championship. This would be an exceptional opportunity for us,” Giloyan added.
