Azerbaijan's ministry unveils social topics for COP29 discussions

Azerbaijan’s Labor and Social Protection of Population Ministry is set to engage in extensive discussions on human development, green jobs, decent work conditions for all, and social protection within the framework of COP29, the ministry told Report.

According to the ministry, the high-level meeting on Investing in Human Development for a Climate-Resilient Future, scheduled for November 18, aims to exchange best practices and mobilize commitments for investing in human development for a climate-resilient future.

The event will bring together ministers and high-level officials from various countries, UN agencies, and other international organizations. Discussions will focus on the impacts of the transition to a climate-resilient economy on the labor market, enhancing the resilience of human capital to climate events through better social protection and improved skills, and the value of creating synergies between education, health, work, and skills in strengthening human development.

The roundtable on Green Jobs and Skills will primarily address the development of workforce skills for green jobs, employment opportunities, and access to green jobs for vulnerable populations, as well as cooperation and more significant investments in these areas.

The event titled "Safeguarding the Sustainability of Human Development: Mobilizing Climate Finance for Social Protection" will focus on discussions about how climate finance can support vulnerable groups and the role of social protection.

During November 20-21, a high-level south-south policy dialogue titled "From Theory to Practice for a Just Transition for All: Inter-Regional High-Level South-South Policy Dialogue" is also planned.

The event will cover topics such as strengthening climate plans to promote green jobs, sustainable enterprises, and circular economy approaches during climate change and just transition, as well as knowledge and experience sharing in this field. The application of the International Labor Organization's Guidelines for a Just Transition to an Environmentally Sustainable Economy in the financial mechanisms and energy sector will also be discussed.

Azerbaijan has been actively participating in global climate discussions and is committed to promoting sustainable development and social protection. The country's hosting of these high-level events during COP29 demonstrates its leadership in addressing the social dimensions of climate change.
