Dior apologizes to Chinese public over contraversial photo

The French House of Haute Couture - Christian Dior - has expressed respect for the feelings of the Chinese people after one of the photos exhibited in Shanghai sparked outrage in China.

The photo showed a woman who some Chinese netizens said perpetuated Western stereotypes of Asian faces, Report informs, citing Beijing Daily.

Shot by a local Chinese photographer, the image makes Chinese consumers feel uncomfortable, Beijing Daily said. According to the article, it features "spooky eyes, gloomy face, and Qing Dynasty-styled nail armor." Social media posts by Dior, newspapers, and the photographer all drew angry responses from the public, though there's been no talk of a boycott.

"The photographer is playing up to the brands or the aesthetic tastes of the western world," the publication said. "For years, Asian women have always appeared with small eyes and freckles from the Western perspective, but the Chinese way to appreciate art and beauty can't be distorted by that."

In response to the criticism, Dior immediately removed the photo from its official website and the exhibition.
