Religious confession leaders in Azerbaijan issue statement on Black January anniversary

Leaders of religious confessions in Azerbaijan have issued a statement in connection with the anniversary of the January 20 tragedy, Report informs.

The statement was signed by Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office Sheikh ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade, Ordinary of the Apostolic Prefecture of the Roman Catholic Church in Azerbaijan Bishop Vladimir Fekete, Secretary of the Baku and Azerbaijan Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Archimandrite Alexy Nikonorov, Head of the Community of Mountain Jews in Azerbaijan Melih Evdaev, Head of the Community of European Jews in Baku Alexander Sharovsky and Chairman of the Albanian-Udi Christian religious community Robert Mobili.

The statement says:

“We are on the verge of another anniversary of the bloody January tragedy, which is imprinted in the historical memory of the Azerbaijani people as a chronicle of deep sorrow, national pride and heroism. Our people forever honor those who gave their lives for the restoration of the state independence of Azerbaijan.

State independence is a source of pride and a glorious history for every nation. January 20 is a symbol of the spirit and invincible will of our people in the struggle for national independence and freedom.”
