Zakharova: Withdrawal of Russian border guards from Armenia to affect security of its borders

Speaker of Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan is not paying close attention to the statements of the prime minister of his country, speaking about revising the need for the presence of Russian troops on the border with Iran and Türkiye, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on September 11, Report informs.

She noted that the basic document regulating the status of the Russian border troops in Armenia is of an indefinite nature.

"For more than 30 years, Russian border guards have been guarding the borders of the Republic of Armenia <...> and have repeatedly confirmed the need for their presence, in particular, preventing illegal border crossings and drug trafficking," she said, noting that the departure of border guards from the territory of Armenia will negatively affect the security of the republic.

Zakharova also noted that the speaker of the Armenian Parliament is not competent enough to discuss such issues.

She added that in this matter, it is necessary to give the floor to those who "truly guard the border of Armenia, and not sit in soft chairs."
