Ukraine proposes Chernobyl exclusion zone as UNESCO Heritage Site

Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Information Policy is requesting that the United Nations add the Chernobyl disaster area to its list of world heritage sites, Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said, Report informs.

"We are moving towards for inclusion of the zone in the UNESCO World Heritage List in order to protect the area and be sure that the future generations will learn about it not only from history books and documentaries but also will see it with their own eyes," Tkachenko said.

According to him, the Chernobyl disaster was a significant event for hundreds of thousands of people.

"Every year, hundreds of thousands of people come to Ukraine to see the place of spirits and the isolation zone - a place that once breathed and is now deserted," Tkachenko added.
